I’d heard of the Detroit Social Club but that’s about it. Not checked them out and defo not seen them live so their support slot on The Courteeners show last Saturday was a great bonus as they’re well worth a listen. I also liked the fact that the singer got on his knees and didn’t stay hidden behind the mic for the duration which means the photographers are kept happy and we like that! Check out their video for Kiss The Sun at MySpace ‘cos it’s both a bit catchy and a bit Wicker Man and we like that too.

There’s actually 5 of them in The Bicycle Thieves but bass player Jim Reynolds was stuck in the shadows at this gig from Liverpool University last Saturday night, where they were supporting The Courteenars, so you’ll just be getting 4 of them today. As well as being a great new local band that are out there getting places, The Bicycle Thieves is also the English title of a great Italian film from 1949 and a song by The Pale Fountains from their debut album From Across The Kitchen Table but check out the local hero Bicycle Thieves here!

This a quick post but I just noticed that The Beatles Story website has had a big makeover by Rippleffect using lots of the photographs I did for them last year.

These portraits were shot earlier on in the year for the new issue of Classic FM Magazine which hits the shops today. The cover image for the magazine is also one my Vasily Petrenko portraits whilst the mag also features a cover mounted cd with highlights of some of The Phil’s recordings and a photograph taken at last year’s Summer Pop’s open air concert in Southport. Needless to say I’m happy with the magazine and very proud to be involved with the continued success of The Phil but, if you’re a virgin to the world of classical music, Vasily Petrenko’s ‘Guide To The Orchestra’ might just be the place to start.

I last saw The Courteenars whilst covering Dubai Sound City last November and I thought that Liam Fray, the band’s frontman, looked like Father Ted so it’s quite impressive to see what a new haircut and some new threads can do for a band because I enjoyed them more this time around. Not that its the clothes that makes a band but the better they look and the more they put on a show, and they can certainly put on a show, well the more I seem to not notice that it’s not really my cup of tea! This was my first gig up at the University of Liverpool as in house photographer, with quite a few gigs already lined up, and so I decided to make a night of it and shot both support bands too and those pics will be coming soon.

The Hollies gig at The Phil on Friday night was very much a first three songs and out job so I had my fingers crosses for Can’t Let Go, Listen To Me and I’m Alive but instead I very happily had to make do with Here I Go Again, Stay and Just One Look. The Hollies have got an incredible back catalogue which I’ve been wading through on Spotify whilst editing, with For Certain because still being my favourite album.

For the most part The Stranglers are one of them bands that passed me by and before the gig I could only name three of their songs, though sadly not the first three, but then listening to them later on there was more than one of them ‘oh, was this them?’ moments.
These were taken at Academy O2, Liverpool and coming up next are The Hollies at The Phil from the same night.

When The Noisettes’ singer Shingai walked onto the stage at Academy O2 last night the first thing I heard from the two girls behind me in the front row was ‘Oh my God, she’s got a banana on her head!’. It was the same girls that I’d previously hear saying, ‘Oh my God, he’s polishing his camera!’. Obviously the world constantly surprised them and very little could get past them!
I’m enjoying these new female fronted acts that make an effort and, as much as I still like a good four piece indie/rock/whatever band, I know which one makes for the more enjoyable fun in the pit and a better end result. Coming up next. The Stranglers and Courteeners. I’ll let you make the comparisons.

With Aintree only a month or so away, the local media turns it’s head towards what to wear for ladies day and with my contribution being shot down the docks in the middle of winter, there was only one thing for it. Big warm cars! All creatives on the shoot were supplied by Impact Models, the lighting was hired from Calumet and the cars from A-List Limos. For a full set of credits see here.

I just got sent this video which uses a photo of mine from years ago. The song’s by local heroes Shack and was recorded live at La Locomotive in Paris in 1990, a gig which I was lucky enough to attend. Saturday is an unreleased track so it’s a bit of treat for Shack fans but the video is nothing more than my photo bobbing up and down. Nice though.
